Easter in Ayacucho

Easter is one of the most captivating celebrations of Peru's central highlands. It is a beautiful Catholic Festivity of pious expressions of faith, breath-taking flower carpet exhibitions, fireworks displays, bull chases, and reenactments of various scenes from the Passion of Christ. During this week, Semana Santa, all of Ayacucho participates in a series of somber religious processions. One of the most engaging displays is a reenactment of Christ arriving in Nazareth, where a statue of him is paraded. on a white mule, followed by crowds of people carrying golden palm leaves. Perhaps the most reverent of ceremonies is a candlelit procession of statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary during which all the lights in the city are turned off (shown here). Without a doubt Ayacucho makes of Easter one of Peru’s most devout religious festivals.
