|Holy Week, Ayacucho 4d/3n
Thursday March 28, Lima - Ayacucho city tour.
When arriving at the bus terminal or airport in Ayacucho (Huaminga), you will be met by an English-speaking assistant, and you will be taken to your hotel to check-in. If you depart early from your city of origin, you have plenty of time to settle in and relax before going out to explore the city.
In the afternoon, you will visit the historic center of Ayacucho, enjoying its architecture and the elaborate decoration in the Church of Santo Domingo and the Cathedral, whose interiors feature precious works of art and ornate, gold-plated altars. We will also visit several magnificent colonial mansions: Boza y Solís, Velarde and Castilla y Zamora. In the Santa Ana neighborhood, we will have the chance to see master artisans at work as they prepare Ayacucho’s famous handicrafts: Huamanga stone carving, weaving, altar pieces, among others. Finally we will head for the Acuchimay hill for a panoramic view over the beautiful city.
Travelers are free to decide how to spend the evening. We recommend touring the seven traditional churches in Ayacucho’s center, a centuries-old Holy Week tradition here.
Friday March 29, Ayacucho Wari visit, Quinua Pampa de Ayacucho and Huanta
After breakfast, we will head to the archaeological complex of Wari, the capital of the first Andean empire, which flourished between the sixth and eleventh centuries. We will have a guided tour of the museum, the extraordinary architecture based on carved stone, the water and drainage channels running underground, the main temple, the royal tombs and Cheqowasi, among other sites. Then, we will head to the impressive historic sanctuary of Pampa de Ayacucho (Pampa Quinua), the scene of the decisive battle in which Peru secured its independence. From there, we will go to the handicraft workshops of Quinua’s eminent potters, the on-site museum, and the picturesque Quinua Villa. To conclude the tour, we will go to the famously green town of Huanta, also known as the "Emerald of the Andes." On this tour, you will pass Piquimachay, a cave that housed some of Peru’s earliest human residents, La Vega and Macachacra. The most attractive sights in Huanta are: The Convent of the Redemptionists, fruit liqueur factories, the main church and the market. We will return to Ayacucho in the afternoon. At night, you will get to see artisans complete their elaborate, traditional sidewalk carpets made of flowers and colored sawdust. Later, all of the lights are turned off for the emotional Santo Sepulcro procession, representing the death of Jesus. Participants in black clothing will carry candles and pray in Quechua.
Saturday March 30, Ayacucho: Collective and Easter Party Toro
In the morning, we will meet at our agreed-upon spot to enjoy the parades and celebrations in the Plaza Mayor before the legendary running of the bulls, or Pascua Toro. After the bulls and horsemen clear out of the plaza, musicians, dance groups and others will entertain the crowd, and the party runs late into the night. After midnight, elaborate fireworks displays are set off in the plaza.
Sunday March 31, Ayacucho: Mass and procession
At dawn (around 4 a.m.), the Procession of the Resurrection starts, and hundreds of worshippers will carry a three-story-tall altar, built upon a platform of logs and covered with candles, around the plaza while chanting “Christ lives!” Mass is performed in Spanish and Quechua for the thousands of faithful who are crowded in the plaza. As the sun rises, miniature hot-air balloons are released into the sky. We will return to the hotel for breakfast, and then transfer you to the airport or bus station for your return trip.
