Arequipa and Colca: The White City and the World's Deepest Canyon

One of the quickest growing cities in popularity is the “White City” or Arequipa. It’s name comes from the white volcanic stone used to build many of its important structures. It’s backdrop is the gorgeous volcano “Misty” and sitting just 3 hours away is the mysterious Colca Valley and Canyon. The canyon is deeper than the Grand Canyon in the US and the valley boasts some of the beautiful natural landscapes found in the Andes. These two destinations are both worth weeks and weeks of exploring, but the best can be seen in a 4 day trip.

Day 1: Lima – Arequipa
Upon arrival you will be meet at the airport by our area representative and escorted to your hotel for check in. In the afternoon you will enjoy a 3 hour city tour visiting the highlights of the “White City”, lovely dubbed this name as most of the historic building have been built with white volcanic stone. On your tour you will visit the central plaza, the Santa Catalina Monasterio, the small village of Carmen Alto, the Yanahuara lookout, and the most important cathedrals in the city.

Day 2: Arequipa – Colca Valley
You will have an early morning start to your transfer to the Colca Valley. On your way you will pass through many local villages and have stunning views of the Andes. You’ll even make a stop at the National Reserve of Pampa Cañahuas and also at get a panoramic view of the Cordillera Blanca. There are many more surprises along the route and you’ll arrive to the valley with some excellent pictures to share. In the afternoon you’ll visit the thermal and medicinal baths.

Day 3: Colca Valley
Today is a free day at leisure to explore the valley as you like. There are many hikes you go on or use your time to relax even more in the thermal baths. Today is meant to soak in the beauty of the valley and Andes Mountains, however you think best.

Day 4: Colca Valley – Arequipa
Today on your way back to Arequipa you will make several stops. The first visit will be to the Cruz del Condor where you’ll get a chance to glimpse the elusive Andean bird, one of the largest in the world. Your next stops will be at some look outs for incredible views, crystal blue lakes, and the famous hanging tombs from the pre-Inca era. You’ll make stops of about 15 to 20 minutes in each village to get a quick glance into the village life in the Andes. You should arrive back to Arequipa by 5:00pm.

Once in town you will be escorted to the aiport to take your flight to your next exciting destination. Depending on the destination you may need to stay an extra night in the city.
